Prime Minister Winston Churchill ordered an emergency cabinet meeting in London to address a widening strike wave by 20 000 dock and transport workers and the resulting industrial crisis. Bus drivers and conductors led the walkouts impacting national services.
The Supreme Court agreed to rule on Steve Nelsons sedition case testing state sedition statutes. Nelson a Pittsburgh Communist was convicted in January 1952 of violating Pennsylvania s 1919 sedition statute for attempting violent overthrow of the U S government. The state supreme court reversed conviction saying only federal law applies. The court invited the Justice Department to file a brief and allowed Nelson pauper status.
UNITED NATIONS N Y The Soviet Union endorsed the Trieste agreement, signaling a shift in stance and prompting speculation on motives. Vishinsky said the accord would promote normal relations between Italy and Yugoslavia and reduce European tension. The piece also notes dock strikes in Britain could paralyze ports, with significant export losses, amid labor division between rival unions.

The Miami Weather Bureau reported 130 mph winds at the center and warned of strengthening as warnings extended from Virginia to South Carolina. The track pointed toward Cape Hatteras with forecasters predicting the center tonight or tonight. Eden Township Hospital district directors learn Local 39 AFL Operating Engineers seek strike sanction. Alameda County Board of Supervisors at noon authorized the district attorney to prepare a resolution offering to purchase the Harvey Owens property south of Hayward for the county tad little courthouse. The board is offering 6730 for each of the 10.4 acres, matching Owens last offer from Oct 6.
City Manager Ficklin told The Daily Review he will ask Alamanda County Board of Supervisors today for a $100000 grant to fund part of Hayward’s A Street work between Castro Street and Foothill Boulevard. He argues county help could unlock traffic bottlenecks while noting available unbudgeted gas tax funds and prior talks with County Surveyor Bogas confirm county funds exist.
