Glendale AP report notes police protection assigned to Joanne Elliott a waitress who said an unidentified man warned her not to testify against Tab Hunter and later offered $2 000 not to testify. The case concerns alleged mistreatment of his two year old Wiener dog Fritz last summer. Hunter 30 said he disciplined the dog and questioned the calls as a joke.
New York AP reports California hopefuls Long Beach San Jose and Marin County rank among 22 finalists from 103 national entries for All-America designation. Marin County is noted as a city candidate in the national contest, with 11 finalists to be chosen at the November conference in Phoenix Arizona.
The House Aviation subcommittee reported no structural defects in the Electra turboprop involved in a Boston harbor crash that killed 62. The hearing, held in Boston, examined possible engine failures and birds inlets, with FAA head Gen. E R Quesada testifying that conclusive evidence on bird ingestion was not established. Dead starlings were found on the airport runway used by Eastern Air Lines.
An early morning fire swept a two story frame home in Buffalo killing a widow and her four young daughters. Fire officials said the blaze broke out before dawn, trapping the family as they slept. Local investigators began canvassing the neighborhood for clues while neighbors recalled screams and a desperate attempt to escape.
In Sacramento, Henry T. Tyler and Bill J. Priest unveiled a plan to raise average state aid per junior college student from $155 to $190, costing about $5.6 million in the next fiscal year. The proposal, part of a master plan for higher education, would distribute funds by district assessed valuation and increase aid for poorer districts.
In Waco Texas a group of Baptist preachers condemned former President Truman for campaigning in a Catholic direction and attempting to influence votes. The GOP denounced his San Antonio remark as unethical and Time Kennedy era tensions flared as Truman defended his stance on religion in politics amid a two day Texas swing.
