Demand Dip Seen in Meat Prices as Supplies Rise
Washington based Agriculture Department analysts forecast lower meat prices this fall due to higher beef and pork supplies. Live cattle and hog prices have fallen from August peaks but stay above year ago levels. Beef production may drop in early 1974 before a fall, while pork output rises. Prices for choice steer at Omaha hovered near 42 dollars per cwt in early October, about 15 below August but 7 above a year earlier. Hog prices averaged 41 dollars per cwt, down 17.50 from August but 12 above a year ago. April to June beef could rise 10 percent from winter and remain 10-15 percent above year earlier.
