Police Athletic League helps guide youths in Hayward
In Hayward the Police Department runs a Youth Services Program pairing counseling with recreation such as baseball camping fishing and hiking to divert potential juvenile delinquents from the courts. Coordinated by Ken Merritt the $72 000 effort funded largely by a 65 000 federal grant keeps 309 youths in files with 18 refusing counseling and only 10 of 289 counseled youths returning to delinquent behavior. The program collaborates with Project Outreach and typically conducts 10 counseling sessions aimed at first offenders and the pre delinquent.

Rifleman Arrested Near Hirohito Route in San Diego
A man carrying a file with a telescopic sight was arrested by the Secret Service on a bridge near San Diego airport as Emperor Hirohito passed beneath. House approves 200 civilian aides in Sinai mission
The House voted to allow President Ford to deploy 200 volunteer technicians to the Sinai to monitor the Israeli Egyptian disengagement. The measure, adopted on a large majority, allows withdrawal by President or Congress if war resumes or mission ends. Senate defeated an amendment to bar any U.S. armed protection.
