Foothill Route Faces Heavy Costs for Limited Relief

A CalTrans survey estimates Foothill Freeway fixes could cost 62.3 to 476 million dollars yet ease only a portion of the Hayward traffic choke. It finds 25 percent of daily Foothill Mission Boulevard congestion comes from outside Hayward, suggesting local origins. Officials note five proposed bypass options are under review by MTC for the corridor.

Ten year old burns survivor named Castro Valley honorary fire chief

Greg McCarthy, a 10-year-old burn survivor who lost 65 percent of his body in a gasoline accident, was installed as the Castro Valley Fire Department's first honorary chief. Fire Chief William Pedroni placed a helmet on him as his father and mother attended, praising his courage and character. Greg, now recovering with skin grafts and ongoing therapy, was praised by sponsor Fire Captain Sam Chisholm and researchers expect further operations as he grows.

Folger Cuts Coffee Prices Across Ground and Instant

Folger Coffee Co. reduced wholesale prices to 3.18 a pound for ground coffee and 66 per 10 ounce jar for instant, lowering ground by 20 cents and instant by three cents an ounce. The move follows declines in imported green coffee and will take about 60 days to filter to retail. The cut, second in a month, is part of ongoing pricing shifts by Folger, a Procter & Gamble division. In San Francisco, MIA Co. matched the 20 cent ground coffee reduction to 3.18 a pound effective yesterday.

Nixon rally calls for fighting spirit in Orange County

Former president Nixon, in his first political speech since resignation, urged Republicans to mobilize with a fighting spirit and enthusiasm over money. Speaking at a private oceanfront home to about 50 wealthy Orange County donors, he pressed for young, attractive candidates and party rebuilding, noting Orange County's shift from a Republican stronghold to more Democrats in recent years.

Dodgers, Royals Win To Take 2-1 Playoff Leads
