Both residents were away when neighbors reported the blaze emanating from under a garage door. Hayward and Fairview fire crews responded, gaining control before further assistance arrived. The fire confined mainly to the garage but spread to the rear, engulfing the kitchen, bathroom and a bedroom with heavy smoke and heat. Anderson’s wife cried at the loss. no son or daughter was home. Firemen battled for about 45 minutes, with one more grass fire on nearby property also requiring about an hour of effort.
United Nations forces massed from Wonsan to Kaesong as Gen Douglas MacArthur readies a final assault to crush North Korean communists. Reports say Marines and Seventh Division may amass for a new amphibious strike while South Korean forces push toward Wonsan and near the 24th parallel. The UN aims to defeat the Korean communist army and win freedom for missing American prisoners, with about 3,000 reported missing and possibly held as captives.
The United Nations General Assembly approved an eight power plan by 47 to with 7 abstentions to authorize MacArthur to pursue an armistice in North Korea and press for the release of thousands of Korean prisoners. A UN commission will oversee unification and rehabilitation with members Australia Chile The Netherlands Pakistan the Philippines Thailand and Turkey. The Korean foreign minister urged immediate freedom for prisoners still held by North Korea as delegates noted MacArthur’s broadcasts had yet to yield results.
