A massive oil burning boiler exploded in a two story Manhattan building housing about 100 New York Telephone Co. workers. The blast killed at least 21 and injured more than 100, most of them women, as debris and smoke filled the basement lunchroom and surrounding streets. Emergency crews and officials opened investigations into safety and possible negligence.
