San Francisco. Schools Superintendent Robert E. Jenkins says a threatened strike by the 1,800 member Federation of Teachers is a tragic power play for control in violation of state law. He will try to keep schools open if the strike proceeds next Thursday and may seek a court injunction, though one could not be obtained until a walkout begins.
Life Magazine refused the city of San Francisco’s demand for a retraction on charges against the Police Department. Managing Editor Ralph Graves wrote that editors are convinced of the June 20 issue’s material accuracy, based on excerpts from Whittemore’s book. The board of supervisors had urged a retraction amid claims of police brutality and falsified statements.
In San Francisco UPI reports attorneys for Mayor Joseph Alioto and Look Magazine exchanged motions in federal court over the libel suit alleging an article connected Alioto to the Mafia. Alioto seeks limits on pretrial financial inquiries while Look seeks a secrecy order on all evidence. The judge will hear more Oct. 10 before U.S. District Judge Albert C. Wollenberg.
The U S Geological Survey in Menlo Park will publicly display a moon rock brought back by Apollo 11 astronauts during the weekends of October 8 and 18. After UC Berkeley cuts up a moon rock for experiments, this Menlo Park exhibit becomes the only Northern California moon rock display.
San Francisco Planning Commission backs improved bus service to ease Golden Gate Bridge congestion and a San Francisco Marin ferry system. Recommends placing all transit facilities in the SF Marin corridor under a single agency, ideally the bridge district. Report by planning director Allan B Jacobs sent to Mayor Alioto and the Board of Supervisors.
The Judicial Qualifications Commission is urged to act quickly after San Jose Municipal Court Judge Gerald S. Chargin allegedly told a Mexican American defendant you are fewer than animals. A transcript of the remarks was sent to the commission, which oversees judicial conduct.
UPI report notes Billy Graham reading from a Hebrew Bible given by Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir during the Southern California Crusade Youth Night in Anaheim. He met Meir at an afternoon tea and 23,000 attendees, largely teenagers, were present at Anaheim Stadium Thursday night.
Sebastopol health officials launched an intensified hepatitis control drive after two new cases surfaced, bringing total cases to seven all in children. County public health director Dr. Walter Clowers ordered gamma globulin injections for residents of a local trailer park. Chief Deputy Ally Gen. Charles A. O'Brien urged swift action and full examination of concerns as the broader legal environment faced scrutiny in unrelated remarks describing a sensational sentencing incident.
Sacramento reports municipal Judge Earl Warren Jr being criticized by law officers for his handling of a bottomless dance trial. Prosecutors Price and Misterly assail the judge calling the court a three ring circus while Warren defends his ruling and vows to uphold the Constitution. Two dancers Sheila Brendenson and Susanne Marie Haines, both 22, were acquitted after jurors reconsidered following the judge’s instruction.
Los Angeles report says two Friends of the Black Panthers members were arrested on charges of buying hand grenades for the militant group. Donald Freed, 37, a self described college teacher and playwright, and Shirley Jean Sutherland, 35, a homemaker, were taken into custody. Ten grenades were found at Freed’s apartment. no grenades were located at Sutherland’s home though she helped fund the purchase. U.S. Treasury agents and police said the pair are affiliated with the organization and were charged with unlawful possession of a destructive device.
Proctor 4 H Club members will hold a hayride in Castro Valley tomorrow. The event begins at 7 30 p m at Big Oak Stables 11425 Cull Can yon Road with members and guests invited to attend.
Lt Gov Ed Reinecke sits with a German band in his Sacramento office as the group plays and sings to publicize an upcoming German festival. Reinecke has German ancestry and drums along with the band during the visit.
Chicago report cites Agriculture Department official Undersecretary J Phil Campbell stating little further increases in retail food prices. He predicts larger meat poultry and fruit and vegetable supplies will stabilize prices, with milk and dairy prices to remain high amid ample potato output and plentiful potatoes.
