Negro Held For Arson In Birmingham

A 20 year old Negro, Johnny Lewis Ruffin, was arrested at a hospital after an explosion and fire destroyed the Discount Meat Center, a white owned store in a Negro neighborhood. Police say he dosed the shop with gasoline and a hot water heater ignited fumes. the blast caused the roof to collapse. About 50 Negroes gathered at the scene but stayed orderly as police, some with submachine guns, sealed the area.
