statewide forecast shows fair conditions across California with coastal fog and showers in extreme north, cooler near the coast. San Francisco area highs near 65 to 76, Bay Area fog and light northerly winds, Monterey Bay and Salinas regions show variable coastal winds and mid-60s to mid-70s. Valley regions expect mainly fair skies, highs around 85 to 95, with northwest winds 10 to 25 knots near coast and Salinas.
Today's high reaches a warm limit with a cooler low later. Rainfall measured through 7 p.m. amounts to light totals across the 24 hour period, with regional variation.
Former Army General Edwin A. Walker is held in a federal hospital prison unit facing charges including rebellion and seditious conspiracy. He was captured after urging demonstrators in Oxford, Mississippi, and flown there with four U.S. marshals. a trial date has not been set.
In San Francisco a special grand jury will be convened after a month of fighting over murder charges against Geza De Kaplany, a Hungarian-born physician accused of torturing and killing his bride with surgical instruments and acid. Bail was set at 52500 as prosecutors pursue counts of murder and assault. The victim, a model and showgirl, died after a controversial marriage.
Police report a slight earthquake near the California Nevada border centered near Lake Tahoe with the UC Berkeley seismograph noting a 20 minute tremor. No damage reported though windows broke in nearby communities and authorities investigated after a separate case involving a San Jose physician and his bride, with violent injuries and a motive cited as jealousy.
World War I ace and Eastern Air Lines chair Ed Rickenbacker attacked liberals in a speech to United Press International editors. He warned a November vote will decide if the nation stays on a welfare state path, urged 35 to 40 conservative Congress members, withdrawal from the United Nations, and ending foreign aid.
