Marcello and his brother Joseph were among 13 crime syndicate bosses arrested recently in New York. The operation followed close to the airport terminal scene where agents pursued graphers linked to Marcello.
Hayward Mayor John K. Smith and Pleasanton Mayor Warren Harding will meet before the Oct. 27 Local Agency Formation Commission session to pursue a compromise on Hayward's eastward annexation proposal. The revived plan would extend beyond the earlier rejection line, likely from Highway 50 to the Pleasanton border, with the eastern limit still disputed.
Jelfrey Turner a junior at Washington High School wore a Black Panther Party button provoking a threat of suspension by Vice Principal Carl Williams. Turner said he believes in the movement and planned to wear the button again Monday despite the principal’s order to remove it. The incident drew his mother Margaret Bowman into the case.

In Washington AP dispatch, Senate Democratic Leader Mansfield urged former President Eisenhower to tell President Johnson the number of troops and types of weapons required for victory in Vietnam. Eisenhower, famed for World War II leadership and Korea ceasefire, endorsed applying as much force as needed to win.
Moscow’s chargé d’affaires led a Soviet walkout from a celebration marking the 17th anniversary of the People's Republic of China. Representatives from Poland Hungary Bulgaria Mongolia East Germany and Czechoslovakia followed. Some allied envoys remained with North Vietnam North Korea and Albania.
Hurricane Ines stalled over Cuba's south coast and showed a drift toward Florida. After 24 hours over rugged terrain, winds dropped to hurricane force at 11 a.m. EST. Forecasters feared further weakening but expected the storm to remain stationary for about two hours as disaster tallies rose with more than 100 dead and many bodies feared in the Caribbean.
The hurricane roared along Cuba’s south coast with winds near 134 mph. Forecasters expected a northward turn toward the Bahamas or Florida but Inez veered west-northwest instead, threatening western Cuba and the Florida Keys with continued brutal winds and rain as warnings stayed in effect for small craft.
