Tragic Alameda Highway Crashes Claim Two Youths
A 42 year old Hayward man died yesterday when his car hit a gravel truck at Highway 50 and Santa Rita Road. In Fremont a boy died in a single car rollover on the Nimitz Freeway near Mowry Avenue. The Alameda victim was Robin Fitzgerald, son of Mr and Mrs Donald Fitzgerald. The Hayward man is identified as Vernon Van Hausma of 27644 Anderson Place. Dennis M Crooks, 13, of Treasure Island, was injured but listed in good condition. Patricia Fitzgerald, 24, driving, and her son Donald, 2, were hospitalized in fair condition after the Fremont crash. The truck driver, Robert S Collins, 21, of Sacramento, was uninjured. The accidents occurred amid reports of a severe head laceration and car damage.

Close Call For Boy 8 In Leandro
In San Leandro an eight year old boy near Hathh Avenue and MacArthur Boulevard was buried briefly under a load of gravel from a construction truck. Ronald Cascarejo of 14527 Saturn Drive was uninjured but very frightened after two construction workers dug him out. Rescuers John C. Brown and Garland Bedford, both mechanics for Gordon W. Bail Construction Co., witnessed and aided the rescue.
