Grandmother's mislaid gift leads to a police locker mix up

In Livermore a grandmother left birthday clothes on the wrong doorstep. Armando Calmenera, now three, eventually received the items after police held them as a confusing donation. A prankish mix up resolved with humor as the gifts finally fit and a cache was cleared.

County argues over fire district grants and funding routes

Deputy county counsel Kelvin Booty ruled federal revenue sharing cannot be a gift to the fire districts. Officials pursue alternate funding, saying the Ashland station location and Fairview expansion grants cannot be given as gifts. The county could loan funds or pay for county services to the districts instead.

Gypsy canceled at Mission San Jose High School

At Mission San Jose High School in Fremont, the musical Gypsy about Gypsy Rose Lee was cancelled by Principal Vance Nelson and faculty over concerns it might be inappropriate for students. A new play was chosen to showcase student talents amid worries about community reception.

Deadly department store fire in Kumamoto Japan

A large department store crowded with holiday shoppers caught fire in Kumamoto. Police say as many as 90 to 100 may have perished and about 100 injured. Fire crews battled smoke and flames, rescuing survivors by helicopter and from ladders as investigations begin into the blaze likely fueled by decorations and merchandise.

Cancer virus link debated says researchers split on proof

New York report notes growing evidence that viruses may cause many human cancers and that vaccines could prevent some. Dr Howard Temin doubts a direct virus cancer link while Dr Friedrich Dienhardt says isolation of first human cancer causing viruses may not be far off. Former Leandro priest to wed in Oakland

The Rev. Ralph P. Brennan, 48, pastor of St. Louis Bertrand in Oakland, will leave the Roman Catholic priesthood to marry. He served at Church of the Assumption in San Leandro, among other postings, and said long disapproval of priestly celibacy influenced his decision though not the sole cause. He was ordained in 1959 and intends to remain a lay Christian.

Washington UPI report notes House Judiciary Committee approved Gerald R. Ford’s nomination for vice president by a 29 to 0 vote with Don Edwards among the no votes. Edwards cited Ford’s character and competence concerns and questioned his suitability for the presidency.
