Former President Harry Truman told reporters he did not call Vice President Richard Nixon "that a" and repeated his refusal to discuss Nixon as a 1956 presidential candidate. At a Seattle-to-Los Angeles arrival, Truman praised Chief Justice Earl Warren as a potential leader and denied the epithet attribution reported by Los Angeles papers.
Two teens were hurt in a Sunday crash on the Pleasanton Livermore road when their car hit a parked truck. In Hayward, Ray Blakely and his wife Madge were injured when another car struck their southbound vehicle at Cherry Way and Western Boulevard. Mr Blakely, driving, suffered an injured left leg, while Mrs Blakely had an injured spine and fractured leg and spine. Both were treated at Fairmont hospital. Mrs Blakely was later moved to Levine hospital. The other crash, near Livermore Pleasanton, involved Clinton Bartram and Charles Prager after their westbound car hit a parked trailer. Bartram was hospitalized briefly, Prager remains under observation for a fractured sternum. No citations issued.
An Army group including Rep. Harold Ostertag and Rep. Edward Boland was held at a Soviet memorial in East Berlin for several hours by East German police and a Russian officer. The group, escorted by Lt. James McQueen, reported radio use in the vehicle violated East German law. The incident prompted a protest plan to Soviet authorities and raised questions about applying East German law to Western Allies in Berlin.
