College and community events light up South County

Paratrooper Survives Rough Morgantown Jump

Hubert Herd, 47, a master sergeant and National Guard member from Waynesburg, plunged 1100 feet during a night parachute exercise near Morgantown. His reserve chute tangled with the main, yet he landed, suffered a cracked vertebra, and was treated at West Virginia University Medical Center. He said he remained lucid and feared death briefly, noting no internal injuries.

Bay Area battered by high winds and outages

Storm winds lashed the Bay Area pelting utility poles and trees and leaving about 75,000 homes without power. Hayward and South County reports cited gusts to 70 mph, widespread outages, arcing wires, and downed lines as crews rushed to restore service during the holiday weekend.

Holiday toll climbs to 257

United Press International reports a rising holiday death toll with at least 223 people killed in traffic accidents from Wednesday 6 p.m. to Saturday 9:30 a.m. PST. The National Safety Council estimates 450 to 500 traffic deaths over the full weekend, far above a typical Thanksgiving period. Five children died in a house fire, and overall fatalities touched highways, air travel, and home incidents.
