Sailors survive exploding ammo and fires after carrier Belknap collision
In the Mediterranean near Sicily, the Belknap and the USS John F. Kennedy collided at night amid rough seas. Four sailors were killed, four missing, 16 wounded, with five serious injuries. The Belknap was badly damaged, while the carrier’s flight operations remained capable. The Bordelon towed the Belknap to Augusta, Sicily, as an investigation was ordered.
