United Nations and Communists agreed to a 30 day race to finish the armistice terms and establish a cease fire line. Major differences on the line were narrowed to a few items, with ratification anticipated and a broader peace process to begin.
Paris United Nations committee approved a watch on the Balkans citing Soviet bloc hostility. The resolution passed 80 to five with Yugoslav and other Soviet bloc opposition. A commission headquartered in New York would monitor trouble in the region, while another vote abolished a watchdog set to oversee Yugoslav Greece tensions. Tito’s shift toward the West is noted as part of the altered Cold War standoff.
Reports say a U S reconnaissance aircraft over Vladivostok was pursued and fired upon by Soviet fighters. Moscow delivered a protest through ambassador Hugh Cumming Jr. as Washington contradicted the claim and noted no Soviet naval air crew had just received the Red Banner for exemplary duty.
A fire at Parks Air Force Base damaged five officers quarters with estimated losses around 10 690 dollars. Origin undetermined as Alameda county fire units and Santa Rita prison farm crews fought the blaze. Lt Joe Ferguson Lt John Elwood and Capt Frank Fuson were among the occupants. Forrest J. Cuppert, 36, surrendered to federal agents in Oakland yesterday, admitting he was wanted in Mt. Clemens for embezzling funds from his former employer.
Vandals entered the South Hayward Baptist church and caused about 250 dollars in damage by spreading black and white paint inside the building. Pastor Floyd L. Gurnney reported the damage to the sheriff’s office after it was discovered by neighborhood children. White paint covered floors benches piano and carpeting while black paint stained the pulpit a window and church records. Trustees Harold A. Hale and Clifford J. Horton assisted with cleanup efforts at 500 Harris road and nearby locations.
The will of Olive M Foote leaves about 50 000 to Eden Township Hospital as a memorial to her late husband Clarence W Foote for cancer patients with stomach cancer. One fourth of her estate goes to the hospital. a portion to First Christian Church of Hayward and the rest to relatives.
In San Francisco three juveniles in a stolen vehicle were captured following a high speed chase of about eight miles. Police fired nine shots as the car weaved through traffic. one youth was struck in the ankle. The arrested driver was Vincent Gareia, 18, recently released from Fres ton School of Industry after serving time for auto theft.
Mt Eden association circulates protest letters against annexation to the Oro Loma Sanitary District. Residents in Mt Eden and Russell City sign to favor service from the Hayward plant, with a Dec 4 hearing at Oro Loma HQ and a deadline of Nov 20 for letters to be on the agenda. A Mt Eden Traders meeting on Dec 1 will discuss the annexation and signing permits for the Hayward plant.
Hayward Red Cross blood mobile collected 197 pints of whole blood during a pre Thanksgiving visit. Dorothy Wood, local blood procurement chair, praised donors and noted 258 appointments were signed, though 56 no-shows or cancellations reduced turnout from the hoped-for 200 pint target. Kazue Lake aided with 65 donors. Tillands Valley, San Lorenzo Garden Club and Gastro Valley Women’s Club assisted with signups. Donors pledge blood for Korean War servicemen.
The Victor Lobree family of 748 Via Malaga welcomed a daughter weighing 8 pounds 8 ounces, named Lynn Allison, with Mrs Lobree expected to return home today. Older siblings Judy 8 Vicky 7 and David 8 are excited and await a first glimpse of their new sister.
Lea Favey a 14 year old boy was struck by a car while riding a bicycle on Santos Road near State Route 17. He suffered minor injuries and was treated by a Centerville physician. The driver Hortense Silva Avila 38 of Niles swerved to avoid him but rubbed the front bumper and rear fender of the vehicle against the bicycle. The youth wore dark clothing and had no bicycle reflector per California highway patrol reports.
A three car collision on Baghmer Hill at Patterson last night killed 63 year old Macy I Robins of Patterson who was riding with her son in law Wendell Gusterson Patterson. Robins died at Fairmont hospital after being freed from the wreckage. The Peterson car headed for Patterson collided with James Louis of San Francisco and caused additional injuries. Albert V Young and another occupant escaped injury. The crash left 88 feet of skid marks before the final impact.
Gen Matthew Ridgway said U N forces are ready for any communist action if the Korean truce effort collapses. Front line battles near Sinanju continued as MiG-15s challenged Thunderjets in MIG Alley. Allied jets and 10 B-29 night bombers targeted Uiju airfield near the Yalu river border, with initial reports noting a successful shift.
A 33 year old Oakland woman told police she was kidnapped and robbed by a man while walking late at night. After an all night car ride through the Oakland hills, she was released near Bridge Road in San Leandro. The 39 year old suspect drove a 1938 light green Buick and stood about five feet ten inches, with a heavy beard. The case will be referred to Oakland authorities for investigation.
United Press reports mixed Senate praise for a Korean cease-fire plan. Senators Connally and Knowland emphasize solid basis and end to hostilities, while Douglas notes hope and blessing to families. others caution on defense of Formosa or Japan and the 38th parallel.
Following state approval the San Lorenzo school board calls bids for three new school buildings in the current phase of the war time construction program. Projects include a kindergarten through sixth grade unit on Bengal Avenue near Ginger Avenue, a south side Bockman Road site addition to the nearby Benonan school, and a north Grant Avenue unit with eight classrooms and a multipurpose room. When completed these, with seven existing under construction, will bring total new classrooms started to 103.
A U N Korea cease-fire plan was outlined with a formula for fixing the line. Subcommittees from both sides and United Nations negotiators concurred, awaiting full delegations’ approval. Fighting continues until a full armistice is reached, with enforcement, POW issues, and government recommendations to be settled. Within 40 days after fixing the line, an armistice is hoped. if a 30 day limit fails, the line would follow current battle lines.
