Mother and Daughter Die in Train Crossing Crash
A Hayward mother Lucille Pimental and her daughter Jeanette Kauert were killed when their car was struck by a Southern Pacific switch engine at the Tennyson crossing near Huntwood Road yesterday after 3 pm. The car dragged 1726 feet, bodies thrown along the track, and speed was estimated at 85 to 40 mph. The family was en route to pick up another daughter, Shirley Minjares, when the crash occurred. the father and other siblings were notified as investigations continued. Funeral arrangements will be announced.

Yesterday morning Haywar Public Works received cost estimates on signals for a Tennyson road crossing. Four hours later a Southern Pacific engine hit a car at that crossing, dragging it for a quarter mile. A man and his daughter were killed. the tragedy follows years of demands for signals bearing fruit in the long effort to install crossing protection.
