FBI reports 1974 saw 10.1 million serious crimes, up 18 percent from 1973, the highest since records began. Thefts led gains, with 21 percent rise. burglaries 18.5 percent. urban centers remain highest. Youth and women arrests rose notably, while suburban and rural areas show larger property-crime increases.
Eldridge Cleaver asks to reenter the United States and surrender to authorities in California on parole violations and assault charges linked to the Oakland police shootout. He appeared at the embassy consular section seeking identity papers while his wife and two children traveled to the U.S. Cleaver, 40, fled in 1968, having avoided terms of a 13 year sentence for multiple assaults.
A federal judge ruled Sara Jane Moore mentally competent to stand trial on charges of attempting to assassinate President Ford. Moore was arrested September 22 inside the St Francis Hotel when a shot was fired as Ford walked to his limousine, with the shooter identified as Moore.
Washington AP reports that despite a slowdown, food prices will remain volatile due to weather and Soviet grain imports. USDA economist Kenneth Farrell cites droughts and natural disasters as major price drivers, with 1975 prices around 9% and 4–5% in early 1976.
The Supreme Court ruled state unemployment laws preferring pregnancy status unconstitutional and voided Utah and similar provisions. Justices require individual determinations of when a woman cannot work and will review related abortion and civil rights challenges later this term.
State Board of Education results show Fremont seniors scoring just under the state average in reading written expression spelling and mathematics while Newark seniors trail by about 2 to 4 points. Sixth graders in both districts fared better though still below state averages in most categories.
JoAnn Sheehan and Jeff Lindevald, CS Cal State Hayward students, won the weekend marathon dance raising over 250 for Muscular Dystrophy. They endured 30 hours, shared support from friends and Alpha Phi Omega, and earned an all expenses paid Disneyland trip as 26 dancers shuffled through the Cal State cafeteria, totaling 1655 dollars.
