A crudely lettered sign reading No Colored Wanted appeared this morning on the door of 27524 11th Street in Hayward, a home recently bought by Calvin Butler and his wife Ellen. The incident prompted neighbors to deny knowledge of the sign while Hayward police monitor the situation.
Hayward police investigate a vandalism case after a crude sign reading No Colored Wanted appeared at 27524 11th Street in the Butler home, a sale to Carvin Butler and Ellen Honeycutt. Neighbors knew little. Mrs. Rodriguez sold the house and described the Butlers as highly recommended. The Honeycutt family planned to move in tonight despite the incident.
East Bay officers detained 59 people from yesterday’s narcotics roundup in San Leandro San Pablo Berkeley and Oakland. The group includes 43 men 9 women and 9 boys charged with handling selling or using marijuana or heroin. In San Leandro two arrestees Joan Carl Daugherty 22 of 590 Juana Avenue and Norris Jerome Parks 21 of 1549 Plaza Drive were jailed after the Juana Avenue address raid.
In Hayward Municipal Court a 47-year-old Patomares School District principal, Paul E. Walters of Dublin Boulevard, faces a six month jail term or a $500 fine after being charged with striking 13-year-old Dandy Turner of Sunnyslope Avenue. Walters admitted slapping Turner twice on June 13 and 15, and later struck him in the stomach. The district trustees had removed him from the premises after a June 16 incident. The case heads to the jury this afternoon.
A new teen column by Eve Patrick begins tomorrow on the Younger Set page and runs each Saturday. Written for high school students, it will offer advice on dating school life home and social activities.
Jacob Lustig founder of Lustig Furniture in Hayward died today at his Oakland daughter’s home. Last rites were held at Garden Chapel Pratt Fliers Mortuary at 2 p.m. and burial followed at Home of Peace cemetery Oakland. native of Austria, Lustig and wife Fannie started the firm 528 Watkins 42 years ago. Surviving son Leonard and daughters Mrs Lightner Mrs Rose Wail Baynard and Mrs Esther Greenberg of Stockton. seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
New York and Gulf coast ports shut down by a strike called by the International Longshoremen's Association led by Captain William B Bradley. More than 50 ships idle in New York harbor. Picket lines appear. military cargo moves. Several ports including Boston Baltimore and Tampa see active shutdowns while talks resume at federal mediation headquarters. Transworld Air Line pilot Capt. Arthur De Fabry belly landed a Martin 404 after engine trouble on takeoff from Las Vegas. The aircraft touched down on a desert area near the airport, coming to rest safely with six passengers and crew injured but only one hospitalized. The hero pilot retracted gear and executed a controlled belly landing, allowing most passengers to exit unaided.
Three Qaklana bank robbers were jailed in San Quentin with possible life terms for bank robberies in Castro Valley Oakland and Albany. A fourth robber received a lesser sentence.
