Senate approves babysitter tax break amid debate

Dividend hike limit affects major firms

Washington reports Phase II four percent limit on dividend increases will hit about 10 000 of the largest U S firms controlling most annual corporate dividends. The rule targets companies with over 1 million dollars in assets and 500 or more holders while excluding mutual funds real estate investment trusts and personal holding companies. The policy coincides with strict peacetime price wage controls and outlines reporting obligations under the 1934 act.

Livermore House Fire Claims Four Dead

A fatal house fire in Livermore killed two women and two children, with a third child in critical condition. Victims were Ann Brodahl, 89, Anda Platt, 23, and Platt children Ralph, 4, and Gregory, 1, in their 792 Madeira Way home. Neighbors John and Mrs Weiss were awakened by screams as flames spread through the residence.

Former Haywardite Sentenced for Antiiran Demos

TEHRAN Sh aron La Bere a former Hayward resident admitted taking part in anti Iranian demonstrations in the United States and was sentenced to three years in prison for acting against national security. The 20 year old Oakland resident denied the charges and appealed the sentence. She is held in a women's prison pending appeal and is a former cheerleader at Tennyson High School. She was arrested at Yehran Airport on Sept 5.

Union City official dies in park mishap

Union City Parks and Recreation Director Charles Kennedy was killed when his car left a Newark street and struck a utility pole. In a second crash near Livermore, Judith Lerma, 41, of Castro Valley and John Guthrie, 41, of San Leandro, died after their car collided with a tractor-trailer. The Portola exit incident occurred at 10 18 p.m. Firefighters freed the occupants but they died at the hospital.
