A Canadian teen injured when struck by a truck near Winnipeg was kept alive by a heart-lung machine for nearly a week. Dr J Donald Hill and designer M L Bramgon oversaw the device flown from San Francisco to Winnipeg General Hospital with two nursing technicians. The machine connected to the patient’s groin and neck restore blood oxygen until her lungs resumed function.
Mallard of the Sixth District says he will run again in 1970. Maillard said it is premature to announce plans for reelection but sought to dispel rumors of withdrawing. The Sixth District covers Francisco's Assembly districts and southern Marin County. Mailliard, elected to Congress in 1952, has been reelected since. He is the ranking GOP member of the Merchant Marine and Fisheries Committee and the second senior GOP member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee.
City Councilwoman Anne Garni says she burned a Viet Cong flag on a Santa Cruz street during a protest tied to a Veterans Day incident. About 24 students spent the night inside Claremont Men’s College ROTC headquarters and 30 others camped outside in protest. Herman Joslyn, 64, who received a heart transplant on Sept. 14, died Thursday at Stanford Medical Center. The cause awaits autopsy. Joslyn had a lung infection. He was the 18th transplant patient at Stanford, with seven surviving and six discharged from the hospital.
