Avoyelles Parish sheriff's deputies report a train derailed near a railroad depot in Hamburg causing an explosion and fire with flames and smoke rising hundreds of feet. Two tank cars loaded with dangerous chemicals are involved and threatened by the fire. No injuries are reported.
The FSI warns treasure hunters away from Berkeley hills where a fortune in stolen gems is believed buried. Authorities traced $1.25 million in uninswed gems stolen from Victor Nash, recovered $200,000 in gems from a staged sale at Coit Tower, San Francisco, and saved about half a million dollars still missing.
