A surprising Thursday night scene in Hayward features the Kitchenettes, a women’s band aged 56 to 78 with a 73 year old tap dancer. Led by Mildred Hexton they started last January with six members and now boast over 20. They jammed to Rock Around the Clock during a break and plan further rehearsal sessions.

Newark uses recreation major to bridge city and school district
Pam Gaston a 21 year old recreation major from California State University Hayward leads an innovative after school program at Graham Elementary in Newark. The pilot began Sept 29 and runs seven hours weekly serving 270 students across 101 classrooms. City recreation staff bring arts crafts soccer and other activities expanding the curriculum without hindering core subjects. Principal George Mathiesen notes the program boosts exposure to nonacademic activities and has grown after school participation from 3 to 150 students daily.

139 evacuated from fiery jetliner in New York
A chartered Overseas National Airlines jetliner with 139 aboard caught fire on takeoff from Kennedy Airport. Initial reports say all aboard were evacuated safely. The flight was bound for Frankfurt and then Saudi Arabia to pick up flights. The incident recalled the nearby Flight 66 disaster of 1966.

Infant with external heart makes history
In Philadelphia, Christopher Wall Jr, born with ectopia cordis, became the first infant in a small number of cases to survive beyond two days after doctors at Children’s Hospital covered his heart with skin and gradually moved it back into the chest. A rare condition required improvisational care and a five attempt surgery before success was achieved. Christopher’s father, previously unemployed, later found work with the Camden County DA’s office, while his mother Teresa cared for him.
