A record Veterans Day parade along East 14th in San Leandro drew about 30,000 spectators despite sleet. The 17 divisions and 18 marching units featured Alameda County and Bay Area military units, floats, and officials, with the Oakland division winning the parade Sweepstakes and dignitaries including Supervisors Pursel Dunn Sweeney Razete and Assemblyman Bee in attendance.

Stevenson Speech Draws Reaction on UN Border Guards

Man Dies Stranded In Leandro Marsh

An Oakland man, Robert E. Taylor, 30, died at Highland Hospital after a motor boat he was on was stranded in San Leandro Bay near the Oakland airport channel. Companions included William Baker, 84, of Alameda, who was rescued at daylight. Baker’s mother confirmed the loss. Police and Coast Guard helicopters assisted. a passerby found Taylor near Hysebergst Loop road and alerted responders.

Abbott Trial Jury Quizzing To Resume In Oakland

In the Burton W. Abbott kidnap murder case in Alameda County Superior Court Judge Charles Wade Snook prepares to resume voir dire after a holiday recess. Attorneys expect to panel a jury this week, with 55 prospective jurors to be questioned. Abbott, 27, an Alameda resident and UC accounting student, faces kidnapping and murder charges. 80 Year Old Hurt By Backing Auto

Hayward police report an 80 year old woman was treated for minor injuries at Fairmont hospital after being struck by a car backing from an Armstrong Street driveway. The driver Myrtle James Byers, 18, of 1125 Armstrong Street, told officers she could not see the victim Joaquina Siva of 860 First Street. No citations issued yet as investigations continue.

Registration Deadline On Charter Vote In Hayward

Hayward residents have four days to register for the charter election on January 10. Registration sites include Hayward fire stations at 674 Castro Street and 2064 Harder Road, the city clerk’s office in City Hall, or 1262 Orchard. The last day to register is Thursday.

Eight Hurt In Two Crashes In Leandro And Hayward

Eight persons were injured in two crashes in the Bay Area last night and today. A three car collision at the Eastshore Freeway High Street interchange near Leandro left an 18 year old girl critically hurt and three neighbors injured. A second crash on Acquire road south of Hayward left three teenage boys hurt, one seriously, when their car overturned.
