In Belfast and Londonderry violence flared as gunmen killed two policemen in uniform off duty near Oldpark Road and Catholic vigilantism publicly shamed a girl in Bogside for associating with British soldiers. The death toll rose to 157 in two years of Ulster violence. Witnesses described a crowd of women forcing a 1 year old girl named Deirdre Dully to have her hair cropped and ink poured on her face before a so called IRA court.
Forecast calls for showers tonight then improvement tomorrow with a 20 percent rain chance. Tonight low temperatures will be in the 40s, and tomorrow’s high expected in the upper 40s. More weather on page 28.
Two armed bandits shot and killed Phillips Liquor Store clerk Henry Phillips of Oakland, behind the counter at 32 E 14th St. They fled with $30. Phillips died at San Leandro Memorial Hospital. Witnesses described two youths in a dark-colored car. Police noted no sign of struggle. In a separate incident, a lone bandit reportedly stole 75 dollars from a gas station on MacArthur Boulevard.
Washington price guidance from the Price Commission sets Phase II price increases at two and a half percent per year, allowing some deviations if justified by costs. No retroactive raises or new ponds are allowed during the freeze period, with only current costs in effect. Rent freezes continue until Phase II rules are defined with a new rent board. large firms must notify price plans in advance.
Neal Bearden, 53, will resign as Hayward interim city manager to become director of finance in Auburn in the Sierra foothills. He has served as Hayward finance director for 21 years and accepted the temporary city manager role last month after a council power struggle. Auburn officials say his pay will be about 12,000 annually. Bearden cites a lifelong wish to move into mountain areas and a significant pay cut as reasons for his departure.
President Nixon paid homage to the nation’s war dead by laying a wreath at Arlington National Cemetery on the 50th anniversary of the entombment of the first unidentified soldier from World War I World War II and the Korean War. Brig. Gen. James B. Hughes assisted the President.
Mayor Jack Maltester of San Leandro is named to a seven member White House advisory committee for President Nixon's Cost of Living Council. The panel includes mayors governors and other local officials to advise on salaries and prices and to set guidelines for pay and benefit increases for state and local government workers. Maltester departs Sunday for a swearing in in Washington DC and the panel plans to meet Monday and Tuesday.
A man jumped from the south tower of the Golden Gate Bridge at 10:50 am and survived, becoming the sixty person in history to do so. Henry Harrington, 26, of Pacifico California, landed about 270 feet below. Coast Guard retrieved him and rushed to San Francisco General Hospital where he remained alive and semi conscious after initial X rays.
Sacramento AP reports Lt. Gov. Ed Reinecke rejected allegations by former aide Hal Steward that he spent taxpayer money to run for governor and joined an undercover conspiracy against Gov. Reagan. Steward, 49, claimed a staff plot would have signed and vetoed bills to aid Reinecke's presidential bid during Reagan's Asia tour. Reinecke called the charges unfounded. Steward also accused press agents and staff of orchestrating dishonesty in public business. Teagan defended Reinecke's work as lieutenant governor.
AP report notes declines in reading and language for upper grades while sixth and 12th graders lag below national reading averages. Evaluation chief Alex Law cites no ready explanation, but points to earlier gains in first grade and statewide district analyses linking higher scores to district wealth, teacher pay, and poverty levels.
