AP reports that President Carlos P. Garcia’s Nacionalista machine began building leads from rural areas as about a third of nationwide votes came in. Eight senate seats will be chosen. President Eisenhower will visit Generalissimo Francisco Franco in Madrid on December 21 after his Paris talks with Western leaders, according to diplomatic sources. The plan places the president in Spain following the summit and before returning to the United States.
AP report from Pittsburg shows Judge Michael J. Gait sentencing two young mothers to jail for parole violations. Lucy Turrieta, mother of four, and Lucy Martinez, mother of six, received six and six months respectively. Martinez faces a longer term due to an expected child, with the judge saying he does not want that child born in prison.

Lupino Lane, 67, a perky Cockney comedian from the long line of Lupino performers, died Tuesday night at his London home in his son Lauri’s arms. A versatile actor and director, Lane helped found the Lambeth Walk craze from the musical My Fair Lady era and led a theater and circus family dating back to 1632. Ida Lupine is listed as a cousin.

AP dispatch reports a second night of protests in a Basotho city as thousands of Africans clashed with police. One African was killed, eight Africans and Asians were injured, and three whites were hurt. Liquor stores closed, police reinforced, armored cars patrolled streets amid fear after the banishment of a female trade union leader who vanished, with speculation she sought asylum in nearby protectorates.
A contract between restaurant owners and the Culinary Workers and Bartenders Assn. will raise wages for about 15,000 workers by 8.15 percent next month and 4 percent on Sept. 1, leading to higher menu prices. Waiters and waitresses will earn about 3.15 a day, dishwashers 1.95, cooks 18.50, and service bartenders 19.25.
After a Supreme Court ruling ended the weeklong walkout, U S steel mills began resuming operation with about half the workforce back at work and output rising. Analysts say full recovery to 90 percent capacity may take four to six weeks as other sectors and transportation slowly restart, while disputes over wages and work rules linger.

Duncan Hane wen, 29, acquitted by a criminal court jury of slaying Susan Hansen last May, has won custody of their three children. Hansen, a school teacher, was acquitted Oct. 16. Judge John Sbarbaro granted custody after Mrs Hansen's father withdrew objections. Children named Nancy six, Charles five, Laura three.
