Mayors at the Ranch restaurant in Hayward and Newark agreed unanimously against a sales tax financing plan for rapid transit. They urged further study of a two–part alternative including a one-cent sales tax within the district and a 0.2 percent property tax levy for preliminary engineering and admin costs. The proposals, plus six others, will go to the rapid transit commission subcommittee drafting state legislation for January.

Former Area Man Missing Near Monterey Beach
Antone Cunha, 60, a former Hayward resident, was reported missing after leaving a neighbor gathering to mussel hunt near Monterey. His tools and footprints were found on rocks. Coast Guard and sheriff’s deputies searched three hours without locating him. Officials believe he was swept away by a large wave while wading. Cunha lived in San Jose with his sister and is survived by his wife in Hayward and three children.

Plunging balloonists say trip was intriguing in distress
MINNEAPOLIS (uP) Two Navy balloonists M. D. Ross and Lt. Cmdr. M. L. Lewis described their 146 mile descent in an out of control balloon as intriguing. They would consider another ascent in a giant skyhook balloon after a flight that set an unarmed balloon altitude record of 76 000 feet before a faulty valve released helium and caused a rapid dive.

Soviet Hints At Volunteering For Egypt Conflict
Moscow warned that if Britain France and Israel do not withdraw troops from Egypt the Soviet Union will use volunteers from its citizens to aid the Egyptian cause.
