House bans forced busing and federal aid use
The House voted 332 to 38 to bar government ordered school busing to achieve racial integration and to prohibit federal funding for court ordered busing. The action accompanied an $24 billion higher education authorization bill extending five years of aid, plus $1.95 billion Nixon sought for desegregation costs. The measure, with a landmark $5.4 billion direct aid program to colleges, risks a clash with the Senate which approved an $18.3 billion three year bill without antibusing provisions.
