Cal State Hayward police double murder shocks campus

In Hayward two Cal State police officers Sgt. Stanley Henney and Gary Hart were killed. Suspect Fred Moreno a 29 year old former Kern County deputy shot them after an alarm call at the ecology center. Moreno was taken into custody at the university police headquarters.

Jet-set swimmer conquers two oceans in one day

Frank Coughlan, 56 year old San Francisco insurer, swam a mile under the Verrazano Narrows Bridge from Staten Island to Brooklyn in 46 minutes in New York harbor and then two miles in the Golden Gate area in 55 minutes. His wife Carmel cheered from a supporting boat and champagne was poured at Fort Point. He said there were no records intended and aimed to complete both swims in one day.

Fremont school election asks tax hike and board seat

Voters go to the polls to decide Measure A raising spending per student from 1 166 to 131 and to fill the trustee vacancy caused by Harry Sheppard resignation. Candidates Hirng Blawle Chuck Dodd Tom Halligan and Jim Klent seek the seat through March 31 1978. Polls stay open until 8 pm with expected turnout around 12 to 15 percent of about 46 000 registered voters.

Developer Rousseau, 86, Noted Northern California Builder

Oliver M. Rousseau a Hayward resident died at Presbyterian Hospital San Francisco at age 86. He built more than 29905 homes in Northern California including about 7500 in Leadh County. San Francisco native remembered as an innovator by George Oakes city councilman.
