In Saint Beiduc Francois Cordil a 43 year old exterminator flagged down a passing car claiming two men slugged him and stole his watch and car. He realized the robbers were in his own vehicle and fled to a police station. Police arrested a traveling salesman and a soldier AWOL charged with the theft.
The nation's Memorial Day traffic toll climbed toward a feared total of 120 deaths on highways by midnight. A United Press count from 6 p.m. yesterday to noon today showed at least 29 people killed in traffic accidents, with four other deaths from miscellaneous causes raising the holiday death count to 33. California led with seven traffic deaths, followed by five states with three or two fatalities each. the National Safety Council estimates 35 million cars on the road today.
One man seriously injured as Southern Alameda traffic checks go up in 12 Bay Area cities on Memorial Day eve. Police reported 1211 citations and four drunken driving arrests. Richard M. Yepez, 19, Hayward, suffered a skull fracture after soda struck a telephone pole near El Dorado Street. He received care at Fairmont, then Highland hospitals. San Jose led car stops with 2075, San Francisco issued 278 citations, Oakland 188.
London reports Britain will resume substantial trade with Red China despite U S protests. Foreign Secretary Selwyn Lloyd announced major relaxations in the Korean war embargo, allowing exports to Red China of materials now sent to the Soviet bloc. The United States voiced strong disappointment, saying the move undermines allied restrictions and close coordination on trade with Communist China.
Hayward police arrested Alexander Beltram aged 22 of Russell City after a naked assault and kidnapping of a 20 year old Oakland housewife early today. The woman was coerced into a car on A Street and driven to fields near Hesperian and Blyth where she was molested before being dumped near her home. She identified the license plate and the car. Police stated two suspects are still sought.
Fremont reports an unemployed former teacher, 55, Miss Gertrude Kelley, found dead in her bed at 1400 Morrison Ave. Niles. Authorities say two poison bottles and a dish of ice cream laced with strychnine were near the body. Sister in law Mrs. Keller, 1420 Morrison Ave, was last seen Tuesday. autopsy planned to confirm cause of death.
Abdusheli, a Voice of America writer, was shot to death at the Woodner apartments in Washington. Edith Louise Rough, a 42 year old secretary, was arrested. Rough claimed she killed Abdusheli after he suffered, with friends noting Miss Hough was a freelance writer and the apartment scene showed Abdusheli on a couch near a window overlooking the park.
Sheriff deputies hunted today for two youths responsible for 450 dollars in theft and destruction at Fine’s store on Sts Hayward. Daniel Carey 25 Ayrtie Street and Heyward noted the pair in front of the store as he passed early this morning.
In Sacramento and other Northern California points air masses carrying radiation from atomic testing increased radioactivity. The Atomic Energy Commission reported three elevated masses at 10 000 20 000 and 30 000 feet moving over Sacramento Idaho Montana and the Pacific. In Nevada Las Vegas the second shot of the nuclear test series at the test site was postponed due to possible fallout on nearby communities.
