California clerks counted absentee ballots after a six day early posting rule caused delays. About 150000 of 250000 absentee ballots were counted, shaping the unofficial results and Nixon’s margin as the count continued through November 21, 1960. Republicans criticized the counting timetable.
Federal action targets Montgomery and Birmingham police over racially charged mob violence. Justice Department seeks injunctions to prevent interference with interstate bus travel.
