A memorial service for Assemblyman Robert Crown, who died from injuries after being struck by a car, was held yesterday at Alameda Memorial Beach Park. State legislators, workers, and constituents attended the service.
President Nixon disclosed in a lengthy statement that he ordered his top aides Haldeman and Ehrlichman to limit a probe into the Watergate break in and acknowledged some aides may have exceeded directives while denying personal wrongdoing. He also said he approved a plan allowing federal agents into sensitive premises and noted warnings from then acting FBI director Patrick Gray about possible involvement by Nixon aides.
Washington (UP) former White House aide John K Caulfield testified that he reluctantly carried offers of executive clemency to Watergate conspirator James W McCord Jr and believed Nixon probably knew about it He said loyalty to the president overrode legal concerns amid Senate Watergate hearings. Ulasewicz testified he connected McCord and Caulfield and described involvement in internal communications during the investigation.
Deputy County Counsel Ren Zappan reviews a recent two-cat trap incident in a South Hayward neighborhood. The case involves a resident using a wire mesh cage with a spring door and bait, with two cats caught then removed by Animal Control after five days if unclaimed.

Growers in the nation’s salad bowl say wet winter weather boosted prices while production lagged. Western Growers Association’s Leslie Hubbard expects mid June to early July bring normal production and cheaper produce, though prices stay high until July 1. California supplies major shares of tomatoes, broccoli, celery, cantaloupes, and other vegetables, with planting delays and water costs shaping yields.
