A fire blamed on a rotisserie too close to nearby cabinets gutted a Castro Valley garage and damaged two cars. Firemen estimated $4,000 in damage to the garage and partial roof burning at the home of Mr and Mrs Raymond Falkenberg at 19389 Parsons Ave. Neighbors first saw smoke at 4 06 pm after Mrs Falkenberg had left the unit.
SAN LEANDRO A burglary yesterday at the Bennie Velasco residence 3785 Anza Way resulted in $1,233 in clothing jewelry and personal items stolen. Police say the thief entered through an unlocked rear bedroom window while the Velascos were at work. Items listed included rings watches cameras a diamond tie tack three sports coats a suit a pearl necklace luggage cuff links credit cards and checks.
Alameda County district will open bids July 29 for the Fremont segment from Niles Boulevard to Walnut Avenue. Estimated project cost ranges from 723 million to 3 million dollars with work starting September 1. A station contract remains to be let. District officials also approved rail crossing signal work on Hespe rian Boulevard and two other small agreements with Western Pacific Railroad, plus three South County earthwork and structure contracts totaling 2.8 million dollars.

UE students vote 12 719 to 2 175 to preserve the People’s Park in Berkeley. Associated Students election council chair Michael Lauer says about eight percent of ballots favored returning the park to the people. It is described as the university’s largest election win.
Leonard Bernstein, after four saddest weeks of his life, says he is ready for a new life. He cites his father’s death and leaving the New York Philharmonic. He plans to work with the Vienna Philharmonic and to have more time to compose.
In Cannes France a film the Soviet government rejected as its official entry won the prize Thursday night. A French distributor bought the movie Andreas Koubley and showed it here. Critics say the Soviets refused entry due to its treatment of difficulties.
