Low Turnout Marks National Draft Test Day

Thousands of college students sat draft deferment tests nationwide on Saturday but turnout appeared below the 250,000 forecast. Some campuses had many empty seats while others faced test paper shortages. Demonstrations against the Vietnam War were quiet. The exam, a three hour, 150 question test for volunteers, aims to influence local draft boards. A second testing round is planned for June 3 and June 24. Missouri officials noted lower turnout and suggested nonstudents could meet military needs.

An unidentified merchant vessel sliced a sailboat in two in fog near Point Vicente, killing Pasadena housewife Mrs Martha Gales, 43. Husband Egbert and son James, 15, survived with injuries. two friends aged 16 and 17 were rescued. Coast Guard searched for the striking vessel as the Barbara Allen's crew reported lights on before impact.

Grass Fire Defused Near Hayward Farm Susceptible Flashover

A grass fire fanned by strong winds threatened buildings on Garin Road Hayward yesterday. Starting about 2 30 p m on Briar Street it burned over 10 acres of grass land in the hills near Fairway Greens before firemen contained it by 4 p m. Flames came within feet of a farm house porch but caused no property loss. The blaze reignited briefly last night as crews also battled arson plagued Russell City fires.

106 Year Old Dies in Italian Town

Gian na Richelmy Ghirardato known as the grandma of Treviso died Friday night at 106. Born in 1860 in Abbondance, High Savoy, she celebrated her hundredth birthday six years ago and took her first flight in a Diane.

Saigon reports Look Magazine senior editor Cyprlus Castan, 30, of Brooklyn based in Hong Kong, killed by mortar and artillery near An Khe while covering U S Army operations. Castan, awarded Sigma Delta Chi medal for best magazine reporting, was the fifth Look Newsman killed in Vietnam. He joined Look in 1957 after Army service and became senior editor in 1961.
