Jill Landy of Oakland won third place and a $25 prize in the two dimensional division of the 15th annual Hayward Area Festival of the Arts. The festival opened today and will run through the weekend.
A three vessel Coast Guard task force with harbor patrol craft and Berkeley police subdued a pirate skiff off San Francisco bay early today. An AMitoot boat owned by Peralta College District resisted commands, fled toward the Richmond Bridge, and was boarded after a fire hose brief. Fay, the occupant, was seized by Coast Guard and Berkeley officers.
Lisa Marie Pacheco, senior at Moreau High School, crowned Maid of Union City by the Union City Chamber of Commerce. She will compete in Maid of Alameda County and is linked to Joseph Pacheco. Clara Candiese Hill named first runner-up, Cathy Venters Miss Congeniality, and Rena Marie Petri, seven, chosen Union City Princess.
A school bus carrying a choir group from Yuba City plunged through a guardrail on U S Route 64 near Martinez, killing 26 students and injuring many others. Firefighters, police, and rescue crews worked to free victims from the wreckage as ambulances arrived. The accident occurred after crossing the Martinez Bridge on the Marina offramp, the CHP reported.

Judge John Purchie found 15 year old George Uribe of Castro Valley guilty of first degree murder for the Jan. 2 slaying of Ronald Blunt, 14, also of Castro Valley. Uribe also convicted of attempted murder of Timothy Cooke, 17, and armed robbery of Cooke's car. A disposition hearing set for June 15 to determine placement.
Eight year old Jimmie Simmons received commendations from Hayward fire and police departments, the Chamber of Commerce, and The Daily Review for rescuing Mark Joseph Ramirez after his car exploded at a gas station. Ramirez suffered severe burns and is in satisfactory condition in Berkeley hospital. fire officials credit Simmons for likely saving his life by smothering the flames with his body.
Continental Can Co. will permanently close its 1951 Fairway Drive plant in San Leandro on December 31. The move affects about 300 office and fen workers and removes a 4 million annual payroll from the city. Officials said the closure was reluctant but driven by poor business outlook.
The Labor Department said living costs rose 0.4 percent in April 1976, led by higher food prices. Inflation for the year may dip below 6 percent, with economists calling the April increase moderate despite earlier monthly gains. Bay Area food prices fell 0.1 percent from March though remained 3.1 percent higher than April 1975.
