Three teenage boys grabbed a 15 year old girl as she walked home from a friend's house in Castro Valley. They forced her into their car at an isolated spot near North Third and Knox, fled, and left footprints and evidence at the scene. The victim spoke with deputies to describe the attack and location.
Raymond F. Chandler, 48, of 256 Ato Ave., died at the San Francisco Burn Center after a fiery crash on Nimitz Freeway. He was a passenger when a concrete pump truck plunged down a ramp, injuring thirteen others. Another San Lorenzo man, Robert D. Swarla Sr., 49, of 608 Via Olinda, was also killed.
Fairview Ayward Hayward School trustees are invited to a Fairview Community Club meeting tonight at Fairview School to hear community nonmembers views on crowding and racial imbalance at Fairview Elementary School. Club president Charles Snipes said the gathering will start at 7 pm.
Dennis Michael Moran, 14, charged with armed robbery in last Friday’s heist of Cracker-Citizens National Bank at Southland Shopping Center Hayward. Moran appeared before Commissioner Cameron Wolfe in Oakland, held on $100,000 bail. Co-defendants Gary Lee Etheridge and Melvin Dale Walker face similar federal complaints and will be arraigned later. Etheridge and Walker fled custody in March from Princeton, Kentucky, during transfer. The trio were captured after a chase and shoot-out three miles from the bank. Etheridge wounded, Walker hit by shotgun pellet. About $15,000 was recovered.
Police filed assault with a deadly weapon charges against Herbert Olpin and Gail Wassmuth after a bar fight outside a East 14th Street cocktail lounge. Victim Joseph Reyes, 34, a Sayward trucker, was treated at Fairmont Hospital for head injuries after being struck with a steel bar. Olpin and Wassmuth, both residents of 22612 Sonoma Street, Layward, were identified as suspects following the incident.
San Leandro police and fire officials investigate possible arson after a rear of building blaze at Hal's Manuf and Wholesale Co East 14th Street caused extensive damage. Witnesses report seeing three juveniles near the site minutes before the fire. youths fled and were not linked to officials as suspects in this incident. police note multiple suspected arson cases in the area in recent weeks.
California jury journalism professor Richard Tarquinie and his wife Cheryl pleaded not guilty in Municipal Court to cultivating marijuana at their Castro Valley home. Deputies seized more than 200 plants from the yard planters and soil. A preliminary hearing was scheduled for June 10 at 2 p.m. in Municipal Judge T. L. Foley's court.

Detective Montgomery said the incident appears accidental and the boys were questioned at length.
A San Jose housewife, Isabella Simpson, 46, wounded her daughter Donita, 21, in a rear bedroom early today before shooting herself in the head. Donita was listed in fair condition at a local hospital. Clyde Simpson, 46, her father, moved her to a neighbor for care and alerted authorities.

A Fremont man, Robert S. Daly, 31, of 43270 Purpleleaf Drive, died after a crash on Capital Avenue north of Hostetter Road.
