In Timber Cove Sonoma County two Bay Area brothers drowned after a daring effort by Cas tro Valley skin divers to save them. The divers battled heavy seas and strong currents but could not reach the victims in time.
Lt Gen Thomas Power was named commander of the Strategic Air Command with the rank of full General. He will succeed Gen Curtis Lemay who is to become vice chief of staff. Lt Gen Samuel Anderson will succeed Power. A death-at-sea incident involved Jack and Peter de Gracia of California, their friend Cecil Hulbert, and rescuers Bil Cuthbertson and Roy Huckins, with drift and surf complicating recovery efforts.
San Lorenzo and Castro Valley nursery schools face homelessness as the State Assembly Ways and Means Committee postponed action on nursery and school legislation due to an overloaded calendar. The bill would allow high school districts to host parent nursery schools on campuses without deducting sick floor space from new buildings funded by state allocations. Eastbay Regional Council of Cooperative Nursery Schools chair Kenneth Maddox notes the measure’s unopposed status thus far.
Heavy weekend rainfall caused swollen rivers and landslides across the Bay Area. Traffic deaths rose to at least 15 as slick roads and poor visibility hampered travel. Creeks and lakes overflowed, and farmers faced uncertain crop damage from the storm with lettuce cucumber and hay losses expected. Damaged orchards required reapplication of protective spraying, while overall rainfall varied by location.
The Dolwig Cancer Control bill narrowly passed the Senate Finance Committee on a voice vote. Sen. Richard J. Dolwig led the measure with a 6-3 tally after chair Sen. James J. McBride ruled, despite seven votes normally needed. Sen. Arthur H. Breed Jr opposed, while Sen. Randolph Collier urged to run the bill again.
The AFL-CIO Executive Council unanimously votes to strip Beck of his positions after a 25-member trial found him guilty of diverting Teamsters dues into his own account. Meany lashes Beck as betraying trust while Beck exits the trial. In related news, Mrs Lechtaler dies from severe burns after a robe ignited during burning newspapers, with her son killed in a Castro Valley freeway crash and funeral arrangements pending.
In Millbrae the first of two wives involved in a swap plan obtained a Nevada divorce. Dr Frank Schwartz spoke briefly after the minute hearing, noting the couples had been close friends and church members, with a gradual plan to swap wives, homes, and children discussed since last Christmas. Betty Brooks, wife of Martin Brooks, was not in court.
Police surrounded an apartment building in Kansas City and captured 23 year old Isaac Sanders, one of five men who escaped from Jackson County Tail yesterday. Sanders, held on an alcoholic text violation, was taken in a third floor apartment.
Senate Rackets Committee Chairman John L McClellan says he believes Teamster Union President Dave Beck has committed many criminal offenses. He charged Beck in a letter to the American Civil Liberties Union protesting the committee’s treatment. McClellan replied to Patrick Murphy Malin defending the hearing as Beck’s opportunity to deny or explain evidence.
A 16 year old Hayward student, George Sollars, was admitted to Eden Hospital after a hallway fight at about 10 am in the school. He reportedly was kicked in the groin. The second youth involved was suspended by school authorities. Sollars had been directing pedestrian traffic in the hallway when the clash occurred.
San Francisco Bank of America files suit seeking 1,606,669 from the U S government. It claims this amount is the refund of income and excess property taxes overpaid. The action centers on tax refunds from federal authorities.
The Daily Review announces a vacation paper service. During a subscriber's vacation, the carrier will save all missed issues and deliver them in a single package when the subscriber returns. No extra charge is involved.
San Leandro voters face a May ballot on the first school tax hike since 1952. The proposition would raise the maximum basic tax rate from 2.05 to 2.76 and include a pledged minimum increase next year. Approval hinges on a majority. 22 432 eligible voters and 131 absentee ballots. Endorsements tally 749 individuals and 49 organizations, with opposition from San Leandro Manufacturers ASH. Volunteers offer babysitting and transportation via a citywide network led by Mrs. Dick Gillespy.
Paritchard, eleven, of Modesto, was fatally injured yesterday in a freak accidental shooting at a friend’s rural home. The child was seated on the kitchen floor with her father and other children making ice cream when the incident occurred.
