The Daily Review switch board will operate from 8 to 11 tonight to provide school election results as soon as received. Voting is underway across all districts in the unincorporated area with the Mt. Eden recall election drawing the heaviest turnout. Contact numbers are Lucerne 23-2112 and Elgin 1-6210.
The Soviet Union rejected Western proposals to ease Berlin’s blockade after a four hour meeting with Soviet envoy G. M. Pushkin. U S Britain and France announced they would refer the issue to their governments. The communique said the tolls on week traffic into Berlin should go to German experts, but the Soviets insisted the matter lies with East German authorities. Direct talks between West and East German authorities were required, not covered by the Four Power agreement of 1949. The Western ambassadors proposed German experts study the problem and recommend a solution.
In Hay the official temperature reached 65 degrees while homes read higher on household thermometers. Niles saw 90 degrees as crews report hot conditions in a new subdivision with forecasts of cooler weather and fog tomorrow.
A Peiping radio report says Mao Tse-Tung and Indian diplomat V I Krishna Menon held a conference tonight with Premier Chou En-Lai and Vice Premier Chen Yi also present. The Tokyo monitored Red broadcast notes the meeting as the four leaders discuss unspecified matters.
The county approves advertising for bids on a major flood control channel from south Hayward to Alvarado. The four mile project, main drainage of Zone 3A, will cost over 4009000 with more than 1000000 cubic yards excavated. Levees on both sides will handle expected loads, aiding Hayward growth and easing flood fears.
Former President Herbert Hoover predicts his 12 man government reorganization commission will issue a report soon proposing 6 billion dollars in tax savings for U S taxpayers. He says proposals will show another 7 billion dollars could be saved by liquidating agency functions that compete with private business. Hoover spoke at the 39th annual meeting of the National Industrial Conference Board urging adoption of about 70 percent of recommendations within five years.
Washington Manor directors recommended against incorporating the city or annexing to San Leandro. They urged keeping the current government, arguing no long term tax or service gains, no extra representation, and that Manor’s independent identity suits residents. The six page report, after a study led by Lathon Landis, weighs four options and notes both pros and cons.
BELMONT (INS) Dr. Hutton Webster, 80, renowned anthropologist and historian, was killed near Belmont when he walked into a southbound Southern Pacific locomotive. Police said the body was decapitated. Webster lectured at Stanford as emeritus in sociology after teaching at Harvard. he authored many history textbooks. His son Hutton Webster Jr. is a noted painter and Pulitzer winner in Tucson.
The Senate approved a 3,322,488,500 bill to fund post office and treasury operations for a year starting July 1. A House-Senate conference produced a compromise, pending House approval and President Eisenhower's signature. The package totals 2,721,720,500 for the post office, 899,598,000 for the treasury and 1,170,000 for the tax court, and is 37,096,500 less than Eisenhower asked but 39,935,500 more than the House version.
A San Leandro truck driver and an Oakland railroad engineer were hurt when a Western Pacific Zephyrette Diesel propelled train collided with a cookie truck yesterday.
A U S army court martial convicted Pyt Marchuk of betraying secrets to Soviet agents. The collision at 6 30 a m yesterday near San Leandro involved a truck driven by Fred Lowell 45 of 842 Dutton Avenue and Alfred Vrismo 61 a railroad engineer. No passengers were injured in the incident near Oak Marchuk.
Three men admitted stealing about $1300 from Winton school safe last night. The money, intended for caps gowns photos and class parties, was recovered though likely held as evidence. Driver Donald Hagquist 22, James Newton 22, and a 16 year old Hayward youth were stopped near Winton Ave by Sgt Frank Romero after their car’s headlights were turned on. Continuation noted on Page 2.
Sacramento reports two anti smog bills advanced by an Assembly committee affecting Alameda county. One measure by Assemblyman Richard Dolwig proposes a nine county Air Pollution Control district covering nine Bay Area counties with a nine member board. The plan delays enforcement in Napa Solano Sonoma until county supervisors approve and funds via a two cent levy per thousand of assessed value. The district would ban discharges of air contaminants and appoint an air pollution officer.
In Saigon, Premier Ngo Dinh Diem arrests several supporters of absentee Chief of Staff Bao Dai on charges of plotting with rebel warlords to overthrow. The foreign office says Britain is delighted, as a formal Soviet note proposes extending a refugee-exchange deadline that expired two days ago.
Dr Jonas Salk and top polio experts met behind closed doors in Washington to discuss the vaccine. The foundation and government officials weighed a possible dose adjustment to increase anti polio shots, while denying any secret meetings impacting the vaccination program.
San Francisco Bay area and northern California deliveries are expected to proceed with uninterrupted service despite a combination strike and lockout affecting the AFL Teamsters union. Local contracts in northern California remain active, while southern California fights intensify. Long haul freight will not be moved, but on hand goods will be delivered. Bay area members of the California Trucking Association voted to align with southern colleagues, except for local shipments, on the belief that a strike elsewhere is a strike against all.
Bakersfield editor John Berry Heery 27 shoots himself in head with a .22 pistol after leaving a note. Two other Kern County residents also die by suicide: Robert L. Kloth 14 at Bakersfield High near football stadium with a .38 revolver, and James M. Wells 34 in Delano with an automatic pistol near his brother in law's home.
Official reports from Trybuna Ludu cite a May 7 fire at Wielocele-Skrzaskie theater, once an army barracks, packed with about 200 people. At least 56 adults and children died from burns or trampling while four officials in charge were arrested for safety neglect.
Taipei dispatch says the Chinese Nationalist air force detected a major buildup of Communist aircraft on the mainland and launched an intensive air defense drill over Formosa and nearby Pescadores. General Wang Shuming cited about 800 planes moved to bases opposite Formosa, including MIG-11s MIG-17s and LA-11s LA-28s.
A Western strike by AFL Teamsters against three major long haul firms triggered an industry wide shutdown. Over 10,000 workers quit yesterday with potential to reach 100,000 as shipments to Los Angeles and other hubs slowed. Firms targeted by pickets included Consolidated Freightways Pacific Intermountain Express and Pacific Motor Transport. Employers warned of curtailment from California to Chicago and Kansas City while agreeing to keep vital drugs and defense materials moving.
The U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals today affirmed the income tax conviction of Arthur H. Samish, saying the former lobbyist nearly acted guilty on the witness stand. The ruling centers on his testimony in the government case against him.
