Hayward approves tentative M41 townhouse map near airport

First autonomous district costs Bee his seat in Senate map

Veteran Assemblyman Carlos Bee lost his 18th district as redistricting split his base among three incumbents. Wheelchair champion Sheryl Hanesta nets multiple California medals

Sheryl Hanesta, a 19 year old Hayward resident paralyzed below the waist for nine years, has won 24 California State Wheelchair Games gold medals over five years, plus two bronze and four silver. Her latest awards came in San Jose with first place in ping pong, the 11 yard and 10 yard dashes. She has also set four California records in discus, shot put, and sprint times. A senior at Arrow High School, she attends Chabot College and is active in the physically limited student program while maintaining a B average.

Gas ration prompts dealer tactics in Castro Valley

South County service stations face gasoline shortages as Standard Oil of California limits dealer supplies to last year’s levels. Latty Marshall of Marshall's Chevron Service in Castro Valley says he now rationing to regular customers and limiting nonregulars to five gallons per fill. He notes the policy erodes his growth and loyalty efforts as his monthly sales fall short of last year’s by a substantial amount.

Youngest adults show highest rate of heavy drinking

A 12 year study by Don Cahalan of UC Berkeley reveals heavy drinking problems peak among 21 to 24 year olds. He notes a rapid rise after 25 and that serious issues stem from early drinking rather than later patterns. Maturing out is seen more in higher socio economic groups and rural areas, while overall drinking affects about 68 percent and costs about $18 billion nationally.

Polluting cars to get special tags in Bay Area

In San Francisco area a tentative five million dollar budget funds a dozen inspectors patrolling nine counties next month to issue citations for polluting cars. Inspectors will drive orange and yellow marked vehicles and act as deputies with authority on roadside pulls. They will enforce Ringelmann standards limiting exhaust darkness to 40 percent for new rules and 20 percent for older vehicles, targeting cars two years or older.
