National Guardsmen were held on alert near University of California Berkeley as clashes between police students and hippie squatters left about 50 injured. Police used tear gas and birdshot while protesters burned an automobile, and guardsmen positioned between People’s Park and the main campus.
Hayward police captured three suspects after a bank hold up in which a woman patron was uninjured. Police arrived to a carbine-bearing lookout and a blue late model sped away with a nun-like assailant dragging a young woman in a white uniform. Witnesses reported one robber in a suit ducking bullets as officers closed in.
Regents express full confidence in Berkeley administration and in law enforcement after campus violence and disputes over hiring veto power. Board plans to discuss actions, including student representation and the handling of the People’s Park incident, as campus unrest spreads across UC campuses.
Geneva police reported that Gladys Roosevelt 52 stabbed her husband James Roosevelt 61 with his World War II souvenir dagger at their Swiss villa Thursday night. He was rushed to a hospital in critical condition, later declared out of danger. Mrs Roosevelt was admitted to Bel-Air Clinic for observation after treatment for severe low mood. Authorities sorted confusing initial reports of an attack by a mentally unbalanced woman and ongoing efforts to clarify details.
Castro Valley voters debated filling the Castro Valley Unified School District trustee vacancy. The board selected Harold Mefford, 53, after a closed session with four candidates and about 100 attendees. Some urged immediate action, others delay until a new board takes office, and petitions circulated urging postponement. Mefford was called the most mature and well qualified by supporters, with other applicants including Richard Caudle and Dr Hal Kindred.
Hayward youth Lance Cpl. Michael W. Green, 20, was among about 50 U.S. servicemen killed in Vietnam. Son of Virgil L. Green, he grew up in San Lorenzo, graduated from San Lorenzo High School in 1967, enlisted after. Trained in San Diego, he died on a search and destroy mission. Survived by sister Linda Green of San Lorenzo. Services planned in Utah.
The White House said Nixon may appoint successors to Chief Justice Warren and Associate Justice Fortas at the same time. Warren plans to retire next month at age 78, while Fortas faces resignation amid controversy.
Allegations of bribes involving Alamedit County Supervisor Murphy surface as the D A probes a quarry bid on Apperson Ridge near Sunol Regional Park. A petition claims bribery by Ullah Construction. Murphy says he has no proof but has given names to the district attorney.
A $30 million Navy submarine sank in 35 feet of water at Mare Island Naval Shipyard during outfitting. The USS Guidaro flooded in a forward compartment, forcing crew and workers from the craft in about five minutes. No fissionable material aboard, no explosion, and an immediate investigation ordered by Rear Adm. Crank enberger.
