Weather corner notes fair conditions tonight with coastal cloudiness and considerable cloud cover for most of the night. The low is forecast between 44 and 50 degrees with westerly winds from 5 to 20 miles per hour.
San Francisco Bay Area mostly fair with coastal clouds through Saturday and highs near 88. Other regions including Mt Shasta Siskiyou and Sierra Nevada show fair conditions with rain likely in colder areas Saturday. Sacramento Valley and Salinas Valley expect cloudy cycles, with highs around mid seventies and variable north or west winds. Monterey Bay area and Santa Clara Valley remain fair with morning clouds, highs in the upper sixties to mid seventies, and cooling tonight across coastal zones. Central San Joaquin Valley reports high winds and sunny, dry conditions.
AP reports about 30 000 people are expected to visit Castle Air Force Base for the annual air show on Saturday. The forecast calls for mostly clear weather with scattered showers and thunderstorms in some regions. Wet spots were reported in parts of the Great Plains and along the Atlantic coast. Thunderstorms drenched parts of the Southeast and a few Northeast areas with rain and cool temps in the 20s in the southern Rockies.
VAN NUYS police report a year-old boy carried an eight inch knife and threaten classmates on the way home from Havelline Elementary. Two other youths accuse him of attempted holdups and thefts. He was placed in Juvenile Hall for observation after an after-school beating incident.
A San Francisco juvenile probation officer James A. Forstner was reinstated with full back pay after a Superior Court judge ruled he need not shave his beard. The state civil service commission had dismissed him as looking like a beatnik, but the judge noted prejudice should not become law.
A $25 million project will widen Highway 99 south of Barbsfield by about six miles this summer. The plan adds three northbound lanes, improving capacity and traffic flow for the region.
SAN FRANCISCO AP The State Board of Education moved ahead on a planned boycott next Monday in Oakland to protest de facto segregation. NAACP and Oakland officials were invited to discuss the issue. a similar boycott was announced for Sausalito. The board said the action is a state matter, not local, and officials emphasized open minds in the discussion amid tense school integration debates.
The governor signs bills expanding school tax rates while earmarking a 1 million disaster relief fund for tidal damage including Crescent City. AB 7 and AB 140 address elections and reassignment of candidates, with references to tax, transit, and highway funding. The package proposes federal coordination and study of rapid transit, absentee ballots, and charter services, plus updates to budget and public works funding.
An explosion and blaze at a Atlas missile site near Frederick Oklahoma damaged the facility during final modification work. All 20 crew members escaped unharmed as the evacuation alarm sounded, with no injuries reported. Fire crews fought the flames and investigators probed the cause.
Joseph Frilot, 22, of 1288 Oberlin Ave in San Leandro, was sentenced to state prison after pleading guilty to second degree burglary in Hayward Municipal Court.
