Pedestrian Victim of Auto Crash in Ashland
An 86 year old Ashland man died after being struck by a car on Washington Avenue near West around 150. Fred Tucker 66 of Travelers Rest at 15101 Washington Avenue died from a fractured skull and cerebral contusion after the collision. Glen B. Van Camp 27 of 586 Van Court Hayward was the driver. A witness said Tucker stepped into the street and was not seen by Van Camp. The car traveled about 40 feet before stopping. no skid marks were found. The coroner listed the cause as cerebral contusion with hemorrhage due to skull fracture. No relatives located yet for disposition of the body.

Robert Torres, a 26 year old farm laborer on leave from Agnew state mental institution, led about 50 officers on a six and a half hour pursuit from a cabin behind a ranch home to hills near Second Street and Highland Boulevard. He surrendered earlier but escaped restraints, was recaptured at the Hill Road barn by local resident Win Northrup, and was returned to the Agnew facility. The chase involved deputies from multiple stations and guards from Santa Rita prison farm. Sheriff Gleason called the episode a comedy of errors that thankfully avoided tragedy.

Woman and two pilots save woman after helicopter crash

Truck Driver Escapes Cab Fire Near Salida California
A Salida truck driver escaped injury as the cab of his truck was destroyed by flames on the Dublin highway about a mile east of Harry Rowen Ranch. Damage was estimated at 1500 dollars. County firefighters from Feirview controlled the blaze and saved the truck bed and its load. The truck owned by Prickett Transportation of Salida was driven by Arthur Gann. The fire is believed to have started from a short circuit in the motor.

Second Flaming Death Within One Week in Hayward area
A second fatal fire in a one room cabin behind a home occurred within a week in Hayward. Rita Nunez, 45, died in the ruins after a lamp or cigarette caused the blaze. Margarita Hernandez, 81, and nephew Naresso Corral, 27, suffered burns while attempting to help. Fire patrol reduced the damage to about $900. Nunez’s body was taken to Sorenson Brothers mortuary for pending services.
