San Leandro and Livermore endure 100 degree readings amid a regional heat wave. Oakland and nearby cities report record May highs while PG&E demand spikes and water use rises. Fire danger grows as parks face heat and mass cooling efforts continue.
Ramirez, a 20 year old Shaklee worker, was burned over 45 percent of his body when a car exploded at 1480 W Winton Ave in Hayward. Jimmie Simmons aided by smothering flames with his own jacket. Fire officials consider awarding a citation for heroism as Hoffman describes the moment of the blast and the chaotic scene at the Standard station near Hayward Air Terminal.
Fremont parents and teachers protested a plan to close three elementary schools in a large city area. They accused officials of poor planning and late notice, threatening a September parent and student strike if closures proceed, and urged the school board to address numerous unanswered questions.
The House approved a $413.3 billion federal spending ceiling assuming continuation of individual income tax cuts through 1977.
