A three hour Oakland hearing on Newark incorporation drew 230 residents from Washington Township and surrounding areas. Opponents faulted proposed boundaries while supporters urged alternative options. The Supervisors adjourned to June 7 to consider the Newark question.
In San Leandro a man buried alive for over an hour and a half after a trench collapse was rescued in good condition. His partner, 29 year old Lou Drew, died at Eden hospital after being trapped at the bottom of a 18-foot trench near Graff and Estudillo avenues. Rescue teams from sheriff and dive units labored to clear tons of dirt as frenzied workers dug him out. The second man died on arrival at the hospital.
Sonoma County voters approved two bond issues for the Koyote Valley Dam project at the Russian River headwaters. One issue authorizes 5.65 million dollars to cover the county’s share of a 21 million dollar dam, the other 8.5 million dollars funds a drinking water distribution system from the dam.

President Eisenhower said a top-level four power conference could test Russia’s desire to ease global tensions but warned it would not solve world problems quickly. Hayward city manager John R. Ficklin criticizes federal and state dispersal concepts, urging residents to stay and defend the city. He questions evacuation logic, notes siren failures, and calls the local warden system underfunded and understaffed, with only six wardens found where nine are needed.
In San Francisco the Alcatraz uprising involved eight convicts and a violent demonstration led by the warden’s newly appointed head of the island. The disturbed inmates smashed equipment and mattresses, were placed in isolation cells, and the incident occurred in April as part of a bid to disrupt discipline on the island.

The day reached 80 degrees around 2 p.m, Hayward’s hottest May day in years. It was not the all time high. 91 degrees was recorded on May 27, 1951. The weatherman forecast slightly cooler weather tomorrow.
Sacramento Assemblyman Charles E. Chapel R Inglewood today proposed a five point program for development of the Feather river project and transporting water to Southern California. He introduced a resolution calling for a special session in October to consider the FAP and other state water matters.
