A Milwaukee Road special train carrying young baseball fans to a Braves game was struck amidships by a gravel truck near Waukesha Wisconsin. At least 27 injured with no deaths reported. Five Die in Fire Set by Lightning in New Jersey Mansion
A mother Estelle Redicker age about 45 and her three children Kenneth 13 Stuart 12 and Ronnie W and a maid perished early today when lightning struck a two story mansion in Deal New Jersey. The maid was not identified. The tragedy occurred as a violent storm swept the area and the fire rapidly consumed the residence. Authorities investigated the blaze to determine if there were other occupants and the exact cause beyond the lightning strike.

Death Strip Crash Fatal to 4 Year Old Girl
A four year old girl died in a crash on Death Strip U S 50 near Bailey's curve between Castro Valley and Dublin. The driverless car struck the Westmoreland family's auto, throwing Janice Westmoreland partly from the car and crushing her body. The incident marked the area’s 23rd traffic fatality for 1936 and fifth on the Death Strip. Janice was pronounced dead on arrival at Fairmont emergency ward. The driver of the other car, James Gibson, 24, said his vehicle rolled backward from Bailey’s service station as the driverless car crossed the highway. No citation was issued pending further investigation.

Woman shoots bandit during backfire robbery in Los Angeles
In Los Angeles a 54 year old woman, Blanche Hagelstein, shot at a bandit after he shot her partner in the back and threatened the robber. The suspect Samuel Lee Chambers, 22, was wounded as the bullet deflected by a cigarette lighter. Hagelstein’s partner Frank Honza, 58, was critically wounded in the back when the bandit turned his back. Chambers fled to his mother’s home, aided by Florence Chambers.
