Horseplay Ruled In Reporter Shooting Case

A Long Beach jury found the off duty detectives Chreighton A. Wiggins and Errol Greenleaf committed involuntary manslaughter in the shooting of William Hunter, a prize winning reporter, while they played with guns in the police press room. Both detectives were suspended, pending Civil Service Board review, after the April 23 incident. Hunter, of the Long Beach Independent Press Telegram, was killed when the revolver discharged during the officers' horseplay.

Negro Gang Attack Prompts Civil Rights Campaign

Berkeley AP report says Charles E. Scattergood, 23, beaten by four to five Negro youths while walking home from a passive resistance meeting. His jaw was broken but he plans to continue civil rights campaigning and will travel to Mississippi for SNCC demonstrations next summer. He quit the University of Washington to join SNCC.

7000 Refugees Enter Uganda Amid Crossing Crisis

In Kampala, AP reports the Uganda government says 7,000 refugees from Sudan have entered northeast Uganda in the past ten days. The region has long housed southern Sudanese rebels since 1955, amid ongoing tensions and humanitarian concerns.
