May Day Queen Reigns at Fairmont School Carnival
Mona Cahill was crowned May Day queen at Fairmont School yesterday afternoon. Her retinue includes Harold Bowerman and J C Curtis among many named students and teachers. The queen will reign at tomorrow's Spring Carnival with concessions opening at 12 30 pm. The all day event features pony rides stunts games dances and a folk dance finale. The Fairmont Parent Teacher association Holy Scouts and Hayward Area Recreation department organize with Mrs Windales and Edward Legis guiding setup and operations.

Former Army Nurse Saves Boy's Life
A 91-year-old former Army nurse, Edna Block of San Leandro, helped a boy who was hit by a train near Rutherford and 46th Avenue. She applied a tourniquet with her scarf after Anne Jenson, who was on the tracks, screamed. Doctors credited her with preventing fatal blood loss. the boy's leg was amputated below the knee.

Attendants are chosen tonight while Navy personnel from Alameda fire station act as judges. The queen and her attendants will have a mate of honor at Morton's Western Week parade at 10 am through downtown Hayward. She will reign at the Cowboy dance. The Hayward 20-30 club hosts the event at Veterans Memorial Building by invitation of Hayward Post 68. Bonnie Pat and Diane were selected as queen finalists by judges including three air base sailors and a Legionnaire led by Haverard police officer Babe Herrier. Other contestants were Donna Dee Dixon and Mary Veal. Preliminaries featured parading with cotton, jeans, and bathing suits amid decorations and tricks by a Denver sister team. Booths by local service clubs, a Navy exhibit, a program with Joe Lazzerini and group tricks, plus a Western Week climax, with about 100 entries for the parade featuring mounted groups, bands and floats. The Western space recle will form at Bret Harte School at 9:00 am and begin at 10, traveling routes through downtown. Bonnie of Livermore and George Walling of Oakland will judge mounted groups, and ex-Mayor Arthur C. Philips will preside.
