Rey Baker, a 25-year-old Army bandsman from Milwaukee, claimed the heavyweight title of Alaska after a unanimous decision over a charging moose that endangered his wife and two-year-old son Scott. Baker, stationed at Ladd Air Force Base, described grabbing his son and defending his wife as she slipped on ice, delivering a decisive roundhouse right that drove the moose away.
In Oakland a female victim was dragged toward an attacker’s car on Redwood Road when escort Donald Smith and the woman, Tede Richardson, aided by a railroad of events, thwarted two armed men. Smith punched a guard and retrieved the weapon, firing once as the attackers fled.
Newark city council opposed creating a Bay Area Rapid Transit District by state Senate bill and urged district formation by public vote. They rejected a proposed 3 cent extra sales tax and directed Mayor George Silliman to Sacramento to present Newark views. Morrison Planetarium manager George W. Burton of San Francisco says a new comet brighter than any since 1920 will be visible across most of North America in late April. The Arend-Holand comet, discovered by Belgians last November, is expected to appear in the Northwest skies around April 24 or 25 and remain visible for about ten days, for roughly an hour after sunset.
Palo Alto and Redwood City residents were involved in a head on crash on Bayshore Highway near Palo Alto. Announcer Cin namond, 36, of San Francisco died in the collision with a car driven by Mrs Jo Nell Marine, 34, of Redwood City. Marine was treated at Palo Alto hospital for head injuries.
A blaze swept a three story North Philadelphia tenement early today killing seven children aged two to nine and critically injuring four adults. The fire began on the first floor and spread rapidly, cutting off escape routes and trapping occupants in their beds.
Washington based AFL-CIO executive council moves to try Teamsters chief Dave Beck on charges of bringing the labor movement into disrepute. Beck is suspended as AFL-CIO vice president while an investigation assesses whether the Teamsters are dominated by corrupt influences and whether funds were misappropriated.
Hoffa, heir apparent to Teamsters leadership, pleads not guilty to bribery charges. Co defendant Miami attorney Hyman Fischelbach joins in the case. Judge Richmond B. Keach sets trial for May 27, with defense seeking early June dates.
