Misuse Of Drugs Said Top Problem In California
Sacramento AP reports Attorney General Stanley Mosk told the Senate Judiciary Committee that misuse of legal drugs is California's top law enforcement problem. He cited a 2 percent to 3 percent rise in 1962 arrests, several thousand addicts, and thousands more at risk of heroin and stimulant abuse. He urged 14 bills to tighten penalties for barbiturates, hypnotics, and related offenses, including limiting access for minors and stricter prescriptions. He noted 551 overdose deaths in 1961-62 and 170 addicts committed to mental hospitals, and criticized attempts to derail reform efforts by industry lobbying.
